Hands-On Healing at Osteopathic Integrative Medicine
At Osteopathic Integrative Medicine (OIM), we offer powerful hands-on healing as part of our full line of services. The primary options for hands-on healing are osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), massage therapy with or without yoga therapy.
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)
The foundation for this practice is and has always been hands-on osteopathic treatment. We have a unique team of osteopathic physicians that specialize in OMT. We can offer a variety of different styles of treatment to help with the problems you come in for.
Osteopathic manipulative treatment is an umbrella term for hands-on therapeutic treatment applied by osteopathic physicians, or D.O.s. Osteopathic treatment is aimed at triggering the body to heal itself for a wide variety of problems, including musculoskeletal aches and pains, and headaches.
Osteopathic training requires four years of osteopathic medical school, internship, and residency. D.O.s are considered fully-licensed physicians in the United States. The vast majority of D.O.s go on to practice in other medical specialties, but some decide to practice osteopathic manipulative medicine. This is unique to D.O.s.
There is some evidence that the chiropractic profession has its roots in osteopathy. Craniosacral therapy also has its roots in osteopathy. Even with some overlap in techniques, OMT is distinct in how it is practiced and applied. Our doctors often get results even when chiropractors, craniosacral therapists, and others have failed.
Anyone from the newborn to the elderly can benefit from osteopathic manipulative treatment, but here are some subcategories where we can excel:
Mom, Baby, Pediatric OMT
Our doctors are skilled at helping women through pregnancy and postpartum. This can be for problems such as pain during pregnancy and turning the baby before delivery to pain from breastfeeding. Our goal is for pregnant women to feel as comfortable as possible during their journey.
At Osteopathic Integrative Medicine, we have tools that can benefit in conjunction with osteopathic manipulative treatment to help with postpartum-related problems such as stretch marks, vaginal laxity, and urinary incontinence.
OMT for babies and pediatrics can help with multiple issues. For example, we commonly treat newborns for latching issues with breastfeeding, torticollis (turning head to one side), plagiocephaly (misshapen head), colic, and other problems. Children can be treated for chronic ear infections, musculoskeletal aches and pains, and airway problems.
Both Dr. Lopez and Dr. Curtis are well versed in assessing and treating tongue, lip, and buccal ties in both newborns to adults. In those cases, they will recommend working with appropriate teams of healthcare workers for optimal results.
Sports Medicine OMT
If you’re an athlete wanting to achieve your peak performance, then Osteopathic Integrative Medicine has the specialists and tools for you. OMT helps improve functional movement where it has been lost. That means you will be able to move with greater ease and power as an athlete. You can increase strength and flexibility. You will be amazed at how much easier and freer it is to move.
Also, there are other ways OMT can help an athlete with peak performance. A restricted rib cage, for example, can affect how much oxygen gets into and out of the lungs. Restoring pliability and motion to the rib cage can improve breathing.
Osteopathic manipulative treatment by itself is powerful for athletes, but Osteopathic Integrative Medicine also has other amazing tools to help with peak performance. We have an athletic trainer that can analyze improper movement patterns and help you correct those. We have massage therapy for sports recovery.
We have an INDIBA radiofrequency machine that is used by athletes to help with recovery and healing. It has been used by professional athletes, such as Rafael Nadal. If you’re injured, you can also try regenerative stem cell/exosome therapy to help your body heal faster and more effectively.
Massage Therapy With or Without Yoga Therapy
As part of our hands-on healing team, we have excellent massage therapists. Both have different styles and are well-liked by our patients. Patients often use massage therapy in between or in conjunction with OMT visits for musculoskeletal pain relief and sports recovery.
One of our massage therapists, Alejandro Marin, also offers a program that combines both massage therapy with yoga therapy meant to stimulate flexibility and strength along with the benefits of massage.
